Many people could not afford a mobile phone until now. Assurance Wireless is taking applications for low income, eligible residents to receive a free cell phone and service. It is 200 free minutes a month thanks to Virgin Mobile and Sprint. "What we're trying to do is provide a service that can help them get back on their feet," said Ken Poindexter with Assurance Wireless. "We provide that free phone so they can get that call back from an employer. (A) lot of times people are telling people to get a job, but they don't even have a phone to get that call back. So, we're trying to fix that problem." Generally, those receiving Medicaid or other forms of public assistance will qualify.
