| Virgin Mobile Offers Free Cell Phones To Low-Income State Residents Posted: 05 Jan 2011 10:09 AM PST hc-ct-virgin-mobile-free-wireless-pho20110105 Virgin Mobile USA, a division of Sprint Nextel, said today it will offer free wireless phone service to needy residents of Connecticut. Adults age 18 or older who already qualify for Medicaid, food stamps, Section 8 housing or other state and federal programs may be eligible for the new program. Assurance Wireless, one of Virgin Mobile's brands, will provide recipients with a cell phone and 250 free minutes of wireless voice service each month, Sprint spokesman Jack Pflanz said. The program is a continuation of a federal subsidy that started in the 1980s, which required phone companies to make landline service available to everyone. "The service is indefinite until they no longer qualify," Pflanz said. An estimated 107,000 Connecticut residents are expected to qualify for the program. "People need to be connected if for no other reason than to be able to apply for and obtain a new job," said Grace Boehm, director of Assurance Wireless. Virgin's free cell phone program is now active in 19 states, including Connecticut.
