TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – After Verizon Wireless admitted last week to wrongly charging some 15-million customers for data services they did not sign up for, an northwest Ohio man thinks Sprint may have done the same thing.

Brian Dowell says he has received extra data charges on his Sprint cell phone bills since January.

However, when Dowell checked with Sprint, they told him he must have accidentally hit a button on his phone, which caused the data usage.

In fact, when he heard about Verizon mistakenly charging customers for data, he had just spent an hour on the phone trying to sort out his Sprint bill.

As a result, Dowell worries other Sprint customers could be overlooking similar charges, too.

Here is what to watch out for if you think you are being overcharged:

  • First, check for data charges if you do not have a data plan.
  • Also, look for vague service fees.
  • Lastly, if you see something incorrect on your bill, report it immediately.

After the issue with Verizon's rouge data charges, the FCC says it has expanded its investigation to other cell phone carriers.

However, the FCC has not disclosed if Sprint is one of the carriers and a Sprint representative would not say if the company is part of the investigation.
