| Cell phone tracking helps solve string of robberies Posted: 02 Dec 2010 10:19 AM PST Indianapolis — A cell phone tracking service is helped an Indianapolis robbery victim get some justice, and it also lead Indianpolis police to several arrests in a widespread string of robberies across the metro area. Shortly after pulling into her friends' apartment at Canterbury Ct. in Indianapolis, Devani Jones found herself face to face with an armed robber in a dark parking lot. "I just stood there. He said, 'Don't move.' I didn't move. I emptied out my pockets for him and gave him everything he asked for," Devoni said. "A little bit of change and a cell phone isn't worth your life." Though not worth her life, Devoni later told a detective that her cell phone had a program that might be worth a closer look. "I said, you know, I've been trying to tell police for the last hour, before my phone gets turned off, if I can get to the internet I'd be able to trace where the phone is," Devoni said. "And the detective was like, 'Oh really?' and I was like, 'yeah!'" Devoni pays a monthly fee for a special feature from Sprint called Family Locater. It's an internet program, which allows you to keep tabs on where a phone through GPS. The location of the phone shows up on an online mapping system that is accurate to within a few yards. Devoni usually uses it to find her phone if she loses it, but it also proved pretty useful after it was stolen. "The detectives took this information and went to the location," said Sgt. Linda Jackson, with the Indianapolis Metro Police Department. "They were able to corroborate it, in part, by locating a possible suspect vehicle." "So they were able to go knock on the door and (the officer) said when he got into the house, he called my phone a couple of times," Devoni said. "It lit up each time that he called it so it was able to take them right to them." Police arrested 21-year olds Dujuan Forte and Ryan Phelps and 19-year old Toni Golightly in relation to the crime. During the arrest police also found a laundry list of stolen merchandise, including items taken from a string of robberies in the Broad Ripple area and beyond. "Right now we're looking at these suspects being responsible for six local (robberies) and one in Lawrence," Sgt. Jackson said. "And that's just at this point in time before we're able to put their photos out and do any further investigation into their possible activities." "Wow, that's pretty cool!" Devoni said. "Oh man, I feel sorry for all those people that were affected by it, but at the end of the day I'm just happy that they got them in custody now and it's safer for somebody else who possibly could have gotten robbed in the future by them." Police have not yet released photos of the suspects because they are working with another three victims in hopes of connecting them to even more robberies.
