BLOOMINGTON — A smaller Best Buy satellite store offering a variety of cell phone devices and carriers is expected to open at Eastland Mall this spring.

Best Buy Mobile will open in a 1,790-square-foot space near JCPenney, next to Bath & Body Works and across from The Gap, said Sean Phillips, a spokesman for mall owner CBL Properties.

The store will offer a large selection of phones from several brands, including BlackBerry (RIM), Motorola, LG and more, he said. Carriers offered will include T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, Phillips added.

Best Buy also operates a full store about two miles away, at 2103 N. Veterans Parkway.

Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn said in April that the Minneapolis-based retailer wanted to open hundreds more of the smaller Best Buy Mobile locations, with the goal of attracting new cell phone customers despite close proximity to larger, conventional Best Buy stores. At that time, there were 77 Best Buy Mobiles in the U.S.

The remodeling of the Eastland Mall space will cost an estimated $99,300, according to a building permit recently issued to Best Buy's contractor by the city of Bloomington.

Attempts to reach a Best Buy spokesperson were unsuccessful.
