Sprint-Nextel spent $647,000 in the third quarter to lobby the federal government on telecommunications and labor issues, according to a disclosure report.

That's up from the $622,000 the cell phone company spent a year earlier, and more than the $512,100 it spent in the second quarter of 2010.

Sprint, based in Overland Park, Kan., lobbied the federal government on legislation involving public safety communications, privacy, taxes on phone service and texting while driving, among other issues, according to the report filed on Oct. 19.

In July through September, the company lobbied Congress, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Communications Commission, according to the report filed with the House clerk's office.
