Verizon's iPhone Announcement Makes Waves

Today, Verizon Wireless announced it will be carrying the iPhone, confirming rumors that have been surrounding the cell phone provider for several months.
Verizon will be selling its version of the iPhone 4 starting Feb. 10, with current Verizon customers allowed to preorder the item starting Feb. 3. The rumors of Verizon finally getting the iPhone reached fever pitch over the weekend, when it was revealed the cell phone provider would be making a special announcement. This caused many to believe that Verizon would be carrying the iPhone, which was initially released in July 2007 to blockbuster sales.

Once the news hit, so did reviews as well. There are many similarities between this new iPhone 4 and the previous AT&T version. One important difference is a possible alteration in the antenna of the Verizon version might do away with the "death grip" problem that has plagued the iPhone 4 since its release. For those frustrated with AT&T's network, this alteration could prove to be too alluring to not switch. With AT&T's notoriety for inconsistent service, today's announcement should make them especially worried.

One noted drawback is the fact that Verizon's iPhone 4 will be on their 3G network, and not on their new, heavily hyped 4G network. The phone will be run on Verizon's 850 and 1900 MHz bands, a setup that could work on the Sprint network as well, which has also been in the rumored running to acquire the popular phone. Since the deal between Apple and Verizon is non-exclusive, future deals could be made with other providers.

Verizon getting the iPhone is an exciting development for frustrated iPhone users. Service with AT&T can be sketchy at best in certain areas, leaving many with a flurry of dropped calls, little or no service and a high phone bill without the high usage to warrant what they pay for each month.
