| GPS assists in theft of cell phone from store parking lot Posted: 07 Oct 2010 06:43 AM PDT Published: Thursday, October 7, 2010 at 9:18 a.m. A Gainesville Police officer let a stolen cell phone tell her where to find it early Thursday morning. After finding the phone, the officer was made an arrest in the case. Carlton Chance Harrell, 26, of 2317 N.W. 90th Ave., was arrested on charges of burglary, grand theft, and dealing in stolen property. He was also arrested on an outstanding warrant charging him with two counts of fraud for giving false information to a pawnbroker and one count of dealing in stolen property. The case against Harrell began when William Dixon reported his $449 cell phone and charger cable had been taken from his unlocked car while the car was parked at the Walgreen's at 3455 S.W. Archer Rd. between 1 a.m. and 1:15 a.m. Thursday. Officer Crystal Castor reviewed the drug store's surveillance video and noticed a white Toyota parked two spaces from Dixon's vehicle. According to a time stamp on the video, at 1:03 a.m., a man got out of the Toyota, walked over to Dixon's car and then return to his own vehicle, a process that took the man about 90 seconds. As soon as Dixon reported the cell phone stolen, Castor got help from the man's cell phone service provider, Sprint. Technicians pinged the cell phone - a way of sending out a message to a specific number and in return getting the location of the phone. Castor drove to the place that Sprint officials said the phone was located in the 4200 block of Northwest 69th Street. A resident at the address told Castor that Harrell gave him the phone around 2 a.m. to repay the man $60 that Harrell owed him. The man gave police information about the person who gave him the phone, including the man's address. The man was identified by the witness and the surveillance video at Harrell, who was arrested at his home early Thursday. Castor said Harrell claimed he had bought the phone a few hours earlier from "A crackhead at Walmart for $20." Harrell was booked into the Alachua County jail.
